It Began With a Question
The Dusty Muzzle began with a question that continued to surface in many areas of my life. Have you ever had a question that kept you up at night? A question that takes control of your thoughts at any given time?
I could not understand how the same question was showing its face in areas that seemed to be completely disconnected. At first, I did not even understand what the question was, nor what I was really after.
What am I missing?
I wanted answers to the events in my life that didn’t seem to make sense. Were they impossible to solve, or was I looking at the wrong thing?
I began to wonder how certain people were able to see things that others could not.
Was this a natural superpower they were born with? Or was this a skill that had been developed over time?
Learning to See
As I began to investigate, I started to realize this craft was not unique to any specific field or type of person. One did not have to be Sherlock Holmes to see what others were missing.
I started to notice this same skill being practiced in the books I was reading, the conversations I was having, and the people I was interacting with.
Every moment of my life became something that could be studied.
Things that appeared of minimal worth became valuable.
I was becoming more perceptive.
Perception wasn’t some impossible superpower possessed by fictional characters, but a skill developed by observation and reflection.
All of these unrelated experiences became data. It was all pieces of the same puzzle.
Writing as Discovery
Thinking about all the tiny pieces of the puzzle overwhelmed me. I needed a process to make sense of it all.
I started thinking about an experience and decided I would write it down. As the story developed, a new question surfaced.
What can I learn from this?
That was when I realized something unexpected. Writing was far more than a tool for communicating what I already knew. It became a process for discovering what I did not.
Long before I published a finished piece, my understanding was already being shaped.
What You Will Find Here
All writing published by The Dusty Muzzle shares a common thread: discovery.
Essays begin with what appears to be an ordinary circumstance. As the writing unfolds, something deeper emerges. Details that once seemed insignificant make their way to the surface, revealing patterns and principles that hid in plain sight.
The aim is not simply to tell a story, but to reveal what is true, using this truth as a map for the future.
Ultimately, I hope these discoveries are transformative. A Dusty Muzzle piece should leave the reader asking whether the discovery is true in their own life.
Why The Dusty Muzzle?
The Dusty Muzzle is itself a product of practicing observation.
In Disney’s The Jungle Book, Colonel Hathi is inspecting his troops and notices dust in the trunk of one of his soldiers. This moment in the movie has stayed with me ever since.
“A dusty muzzle! Remember, in battle, a trunk can save your life.”
As I practiced deeper observation and writing for discovery, the first name that appeared in my mind was “The Dusty Muzzle.”
The name describes the kind of writer I hope to become. I want to become, replacing the trunk of an elephant with experiences in life. I want to see to understand the smaller details, the ones that may appear as insignificant as dust to others but reveal something far greater.
These small observations are where discoveries begin.
The Person Behind the Pen
I am a Christian. The Bible shapes the way I view the world. This has created immense value in my roles as a husband and a father. These offices require wisdom, which makes me a lifelong student of understanding. Writing has proved to be the process through which I discover what I did not know.
I have learned what I should pursue in life, not by the clarity of a lifelong dream, but through perseverance. Every door that closed led me to one that had opened. I have moved through many worlds that appear to be distant from one another. These worlds comprised music, theology, manufacturing, business, literature, and now writing.
The goal of discovery fueled them all.
Experiences transformed into data. Bridges formed from one world to another. Writing revealed connections I had never noticed before. The resulting principles were shaping future choices. My perception sharpened. I saw the dust in the muzzle.
I continue to pick up the pen because I continue to breathe. Every day provides new material and sheds light on the old. Raw materials lead to new discoveries. Every new discovery has reshaped not only my understanding but the course of my life.
Come Along
I invite you to join the investigation.
The world is rich with discoveries to be made, principles to uncover, and stories to be understood.
At The Dusty Muzzle, the work is never finished. Each discovery leads to another, quietly transforming the way we understand the world and, ultimately, ourselves.
